Transition to secondary school

Transition: A Positive Start to School

Transition from primary to secondary school is one of the biggest changes a young person will experience. At Northcote High School, we know that academic success is reliant on students feeling safe, happy and connected to school. We support our new Year 7s through:

  • Year 7s at the Swimming Carnival
  • - Liaison with, and data collection from, your child's primary school whilst they are in Grade 6: we want to know what your child's strengths and areas for improvement are right from Day One
  •
  • - Parent information evenings and regular communication prior to starting Year 7, so that you and your child feel well-prepared
  •
  • - Orientation Day (in December of the year prior to starting), when students spend a day at the school and meet some of their new teachers and classmates
  •
  • - A core class grouping in which Year 7s spend the majority of their time; and a foundation curriculum aimed at building the skills and knowledge essential for success in future years
  •
  • - A thorough Transition Program which runs throughout Year 7, including daily and weekly sessions with a designated class tutor (called the 'Connect' teacher) who oversees those students' social, emotional and academic progress (see 'Connect Program' for more details)
  •
  • - Curriculum, activities and events throughout the year to support students to build organisational and study skills, develop strong peer relationships, enhance resilience and mindfulness and to build a sense of connectedness to the school community, including a Year Level camp to Phillip Island
  •
  • - Peer Support Leaders (Year 10) to enhance cross-age connections
  •
  • - A team of staff (Assistant Principal, Head of Sub-School, Year Level Program Leaders, Connect Tutors and Wellbeing Support) who work together to plan, monitor and implement our Transition Program.
