On Friday 13 May the annual Victorian International School Student Awards were held at Queens Hall, Parliament House. It recognizes the achievements of international students from across the State with finalists from Ballarat, Bendigo and schools around Melbourne.
Nguyen Minh Chau (Katie) Pham
Year 11 Academic Excellence Commendation Award
Katie is a top Northcote High School academic student. She demonstrates a commitment to her studies, confidently contributing to classroom discussion and helping other international students with their learning. Katie was voted International Student Captain in 2015. Through this role, she has been a strong advocate for her fellow international students and led the establishment of the International Student Debating Team and a range of multicultural and public speaking initiatives. She also led the creation of VCE Study Group to help students to improve in their studies and understand more complex concepts. Katie was a finalist at the Victorian Paper Cuts Competition and participated in the Victoria University’s Plan a Business Competition. Katie is a well-rounded student with a friendly and open spirit.
Year 12 Student Leadership Commendation Award
Xi Wang has been an outstanding Northcote High School student leader. In 2014, Xi was elected to the position of International Student Captain where she organized activities including, Multicultural Day, AFL Day and International Student Fundraising Day. Through these events Xi was able to help her internationals student peers find a sense of belonging at the school. In 2015, Xi was elected to the prestigious position of School Captain. Xi led the student leadership body and represented the entire 1700-strong student body on the School Council. As School Captain, Xi was successful at facilitating student engagement in extra-curricular activities and at organizing seamless events including, the Final Year 12 Assembly, year 12 Formal and the World Vision Fundraiser. In addition to being School Captain, Xi also played the flute in the school Orchestra, Senior Concert Band and Intermediate Concert Band, which included performing across Victoria and internationally in Malaysia. She also found time to volunteer in her local community with the Brotherhood of St Laurence. Xi is an exemplary student, an ambassador for her school and for Victorian education.
Both students represent us proudly in all they do and received their awards from MP Judith Graley. Their awards are also testament to the inclusive and empowering culture of Northcote and the deep support of all staff, particularly our International Student Office.
