Sport
Our school has a reputation as a high-performing, sport-oriented school with around a hundred teams competing in a broad range of competitions at district and state-level competitions.
In addition to curricular sport and physical education, all students also have the opportunity to participate in our inter-school, inter-house and co-curricular sport.
Inter-school sport
Northcote High School competes in the local Darebin Division, governed by School Sport Victoria (SSV), which includes Reservoir Secondary College, Thornbury High School, St Johns College, Preston High School and William Ruthven Secondary College.
Winners in this division progress to regional (Northern Metro Region) and then to state championships.
We have separate teams for Years 7 and 8 and combined teams for Years 9 and 10 and for Years 11 and 12.

Inter-house sport
All students are allocated to a house: Merri (yellow), Cooper (red), Plenty (green) and Sumner (blue).
Inter-house carnivals are held each year in athletics and cross country, as well as football, netball and basketball. These carnivals are a great opportunity for students to participate competitively and for fun in a range of events, enjoy time with their peers, and are a chance to be selected for inter-school teams.
Parents are welcome to attend or to volunteer at these carnivals.
Co-curricular sport
In addition to inter-house sport and inter-school sport, students can join our co-curricular volleyball program.
Students participating in this program have the opportunity to engage in a team sport. It’s also a chance to build the skills to collaborate with peers across year levels, develop their leadership capacity, and become active members of the school community and positive role models.
All programs are run by qualified coaches from local community clubs to train students to compete in a variety of competitions across Victoria.
How to apply
At the start of term 1, students indicate their sport preferences or can sign-up to tryout for teams.
All tryout, training and game details for inter-school teams and co-curricular sports are available via Compass. We also publish news, results, photographs and other details in our newsletter.
